I am writing to share with you our plans for athletics in grades 5-12 this fall. As you likely know, our competitive sports programs are governed by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). This governing body has been working all summer with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to come up with guidelines for a return to athletic activity. Just recently, they made some decisions directly impacting how we will run our athletic program this school year.
The approval of a “shoulder season” which is referred to as fall II and will occur in the early spring for sports that were not able to compete in the normal fall season
The approval of out-of-season coaching
The decision to allow a student athlete to compete in all four seasons (regular fall, winter, spring, and the additional fall II season)
A start date of Friday, September 18 (although we will opt to start on Monday, September 21).
We will be offering athletics this fall; however, we feel that only golf and cross country are safe to play as part of the interscholastic program. Both of these sports are defined as “low risk” sports, and we feel that the modifications that will be in place will protect our students and ultimately our whole community from the potential risk of transmitting illness. We will still offer soccer this fall but on an intramural level, and we plan to have soccer competitions in the fall II season as outlined above. We will also have the opportunity this fall (with the approval of out-of-season coaching) to catch up on lost time last spring with sports, including sailing, tennis, and lacrosse. We will also be able to set up basketball and other out-of-season clinics. This will be a tremendous opportunity for our athletes to get moving again and even try out some new sports!
Cape Cod Academy Fall Athletic Plan
Cross Country: Five days a week with interscholastic competition to take place one day a week.
Golf: Four days a week (not on Fridays due to course availability) with interscholastic competition two days a week.
Soccer: Skills/intramural competition three days a week, tentatively Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Sailing, Lacrosse, Tennis, Conditioning: Tuesdays and Thursdays
We will continue to maintain the guidelines for sports participation (appropriate distancing, masks, and sanitizing of equipment) in all that we do; the health and safety of our students is our top priority.
