College Counselors Engage Students in Personalized College Search

Cape Cod Academy is committed to college readiness and preparing students for success in their continued studies after graduation. The Class of 2021 is no different in spite of the challenges presented by the current pandemic.
Co-Directors of College Counseling, Christine Brown and Beth Farias, understand these challenges, and while much of the counseling they do remains the same, they have also adjusted to help students find success in the college process during these times. CCA’s college counselors have worked one-on-one with student to help complete the college application process that includes:
  • Determining which colleges or universities would be a good fit (even when a student is unable to set foot on a college campus)
  • Showcasing the ways our students contribute to their community in their applications, even when the athletic and extracurricular life of all high schools looks much different
  • Demonstrating a student’s best academic work
  • Assisting with the registration for standardized testing
  • Connecting with admission counselors to answer individual student questions
CCA’s senior year begins with Application Academy, where a panel of college admission experts address our seniors. Topics discussed include how grades and test scores will be evaluated in this admission cycle and how students can showcase their leadership and involvement. Students also learn how they can engage with college admission offices through information sessions, panel discussions, and interviews.
In a typical year, nearly 60 college admission counselors will sit down to meet with students in CCA’s college counseling office. This year, 87 students were able to have virtual meetings with counselors from 35 schools from across the country. Our annual Senior College Visit Days remain an opportunity for our seniors to get to college campuses or to engage with college admission counselors through our mini college fairs.
In addition to the exchange of information and discovery aspect of the college search, it is also an incredibly personal process. Ms. Farias and Ms. Brown meet students where they are and guide them along the necessary steps in an individualized and personalized manner. They proofread essays and applications to ensure that students are putting their best foot forward, and meet with students regularly - whether they are on Cape Cod or learning from home in China or Korea - to answer questions and keep them on track. As of January 2021, 19 seniors have submitted 172 applications to 98 colleges, and the majority of those students have already received acceptances to at least one college!

The college search process in the time of COVID-19 has no doubt been difficult for our seniors, but we are proud of the way that they have risen to the occasion, and we hope that the resources and personal attention that Ms. Brown and Ms. Farias bring have helped to smooth their journey.
Cape Cod Academy is one of the only independent, co-educational, college preparatory schools serving students from kindergarten to grade 12 on Cape Cod.
