JOB DESCRIPTION
The Groundskeeper position is a supervisor role on the grounds department responding to daily work orders and tasks assigned directly from the building and grounds manager. The role includes performing responsible, and efficient routine ground maintenance for the entire campus, part of that role is delegating a portion of the daily grounds maintenance tasks to the grounds crew. Other major responsibilities include diligent irrigation system monitoring, maintenance and repair, grounds equipment preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repair. Pool maintenance and record keeping is also assigned to this position. During the winter duties include snow and ice management in variable weather conditions in a 24/7 on call nature.
 
 
GROUNDSKEEPER
Hours: Flexible shift eight (8) hours per day five (5) days per week. Schedule will vary according to the needs of the school and may include some weekend work. (example; snow and ice removal often required an early start or weekend work) A typical shift could be 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM or 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

DUTIES:  Including but not limited to the following:
 
Administrative 
  • Assist the Director of Facilities in the recruitment of potential employees for the grounds department.
  • Make recommendations in the handling of employee problems including issues that could lead to dismissal.
  • Assist the Director of Facilities in maintaining records for safety purposes, preventative maintenance and regulatory issues.
  • Work with the Director of Facilities to develop long range grounds plans.
  • Keep records of Integrated Pest Management according to the Child Safety Act of 2000.
  • CPO ability to maintain and keep records of pool operation
Supervision of the Grounds Staff
  • This is a “hands on” working manger position. Direct participation will be required to assist in accomplishing specific tasks.
  • General Landscaping
  • Playground Maintenance and Safety
  • Parking lot maintenance
  • Maintenance of athletic fields including fertilizer, weed and pest control. (Pest Control requires MA State Pesticide License)
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Snow and ice removal
  • Assist with the set up and break down of special events as assigned by the Building & Grounds Manager.
Miscellaneous 
  • Meet all requirements of a grounds worker as listed below:
Including but not limited to the following:
  • Ability to work full 8 hours shift (2:45 – 11:15) – Actual 8.5 hours period with ½ off for dinner and 2 – 15 minute breaks)
  • Ability to perform duties while standing on feet as well as kneeling and crouching to perform work at varying heights.
  • Ability to perform repetitive movement (raking, edging, pruning, trimming)
  • Full range of motion for performing tasks of grounds work (reaching overhead pruning, ability to climb ladders, picking up items from ground, pulling and pushing mowers and other like equipment)
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs (e.g. boxes of books may need to be moved w/or without assistance of hand truck, lift and set up folding 6’ & 8’ tables, Lifting and carrying bags of fertilizer or ice melt).
  • Assist the Grounds-keeper in the performance of his/her duties.
  • General landscaping.
  • Grounds maintenance.
  • Equipment maintenance.
  • Snow and ice removal during winter months.
  • Assist with the set up and break down of special events as assigned by the Grounds-keeper, Building & Grounds manager or his/her assistant.
  • Occasional assistance with building maintenance.
  • Grounds equipment operation experience including ( Mowers, Thachers, Aerators, Verti cutters, Slice seeder, Sprayers.
  • The ability to lift 80lbs.
  • The ability to work in variable weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment.
  • The ability to perform tasks safely as well as efficiently.
  • Any other special projects as determined by the Grounds-keeper, the Building & Grounds Manager.
This position requires an ability to follow directions, respond to the needs of the staff as situations arise and work with the students around. It is essential that the individual be able to perform his/her assigned duties without constant supervision, he/she should be a self starter.
 
Qualifications:
 
Must have 10+ year experience in the grounds keeping, golf course grounds, or landscaping industry combined. Must have experience with turf management, watering practices, disease identification/prevention, pest identification/eradication, and cultural practices. Must have working knowledge involving large commercial irrigation system including operating functions, programming, diagnostics and repair of all related system components. Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management and the ability to keep accurate records. Knowledge of commercial pool operation and safety is preferred. Mechanical experience preferred.
 
Must Have:
  • A valid Massachusetts drivers license.
  • A current Massachusetts pesticide license.
  • A current (CPO) certified pool operator certification or the ability to obtain in a set period. 
All personnel are required to have a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check to be employed at Cape Cod Academy.
