Upper School Mathematics

Department Philosophy

Cape Cod Academy seeks to provide a high quality education in secondary mathematics, where students discover, develop, and use their mathematical talents to the fullest. Through course offerings that extend to Multivariable Calculus and AP Statistics, students are encouraged to master as much mathematics as possible. At each level, students are consistently supported in seeking conceptual understanding, in developing their problem-solving and reasoning skills, and in growing in their ability to work cooperatively, think critically, and communicate precisely (in oral, written, and symbolic forms). To facilitate this growth, we employ a variety of pedagogical approaches and incorporate technology aimed to stimulate curiosity and encourage persistence while reinforcing mathematical concepts needed for college-level study. Further, the Cape Cod Academy Math Department believes in nurturing personal responsibility so that students will strive for excellence throughout their lives. Students should leave their classes with a lifelong appreciation for mathematics and its real-world applications.

Upper School Mathematics Sequence
Students who have successfully completed Algebra I in middle school will take Geometry or Geometry Honors in ninth grade, followed by Algebra II or Algebra II Honors in tenth grade. Most students take Precalculus or Precalculus Honors after completing Algebra II. Introduction to Probability and Statistics is offered to juniors and seniors who are not on the honors track as well. More advanced mathematics courses include AP Calculus (AB and BC), AP Statistics, and Multivariable Calculus. Course offerings differ from year to year, depending on students’ needs. In rare cases, courses may be offered online under the supervision of a faculty member Course placement is based on previous performance and teacher recommendations.
