Lower School World Languages & Cultures

The curriculum taught in the Lower School at Cape Cod Academy is designed to be developmentally appropriate, sequential, and comprehensive. Topics spiral throughout the Lower School grades, resulting in reinforcement and expansion of concepts previously presented. The concepts and the academic skills which are taught and practiced are designed to provide thorough preparation for the Middle School program.

There are 17 major areas which comprise the Lower School curriculum. They are as follows:
• Listening and Speaking
• Reading
• Writing
• Handwriting
• Spelling
• Grammar
• Math
• Social Studies
• Science
• Spanish
• Research
• Library Studies
• Technology Education
• Health Education
• Art Education
• Music Education
• Physical Education

While these 17 areas are recognized as components of the curriculum, it is impossible to consider them discretely because there is a tremendous amount of overlap among them. For example, reading, writing, and technological skills are components of research. Science and social studies curriculums rely on all the skills practiced throughout the grades.

The 17 components are included on the following pages. Critical concepts and skills expected to be mastered at each grade level are listed as are the main topics covered in both science and social studies.
