A Win For The Ages: CT/CCA Hockey Team Knocks Off Nauset
by Eric Adler
ORLEANS – If the Cape Tech/Cape CodAcademy hockey team’s win in the Kostas Tournament over holiday break was an eye-opener, then their victory over Nauset on New Year’s Day was a statement – and a rather resounding one at that.
The Division III Crusaders scored two goals 12 seconds apart in the third period to rally for a 3-2 victory over Division II Nauset in the first-annual Winter Classic in honor of fallen Nauset High School student Kevin Fitzgerald at Charles Moore Arena last Wednesday.
The win technically won’t count toward CT/CCA’s record as they chose not to count the game before the season started, but as far as they’re concerned, it’s a landmark victory that legitimizes them as one of the Cape’s elite clubs.
Senior goal tender Billy Carleton made 32 saves and Caleb Datlerio, Dresden Briand and Dan Crossen provided the offensive scoring, giving the Crusaders, who beat Monomoy twice already this season, bragging rights in their home building.
“I think we own this rink now,” said Carleton. “We won the Kostas tournament, and now we beat Nauset. They’ve been the big dog here for many years so I think we took it. It’s our rink.”
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
For all the goals the Cape Tech/Cape Cod Academy hockey team has scored this season, and there’s been lots of them (51 in six games to be exact), it’s still defense that wins games at the end of the day.
Billy Carleton is proof positive of that.
The senior goal tender, who splits his time in net with fellow senior Brandon Oakley, has faced 74 shots and stopped 68 of them in three and a third games this season. He sports a .919 save percentage and a 1.80 goals against average.
Carleton truly shined for the unified team in its highly anticipated and long overdue match up against Nauset on New Year’s Day, making 32 saves – including a couple of critical ones in the final minute – to preserve the Crusaders’ nail-biting and historic 3-2 victory over the Warriors.
CT/CCA, a Division III team, hadn’t played Nauset, a Division II team, in more than a decade despite the fact the clubs share the same rink at Charles Moore Arena. But the Crusaders chose to challenge themselves against a formidable foe this year in hopes it would toughen them up. It worked and skyrocketed their confidence in the process.
“This was one of the tougher tests for us,” said Carleton. “We’ve been watching Nauset play here for years and know they’re a good team, so it’s a pretty good feeling to come out and beat them.”
That was easier said than done, especially for Carleton, who had to buckle down in the waning seconds to secure the win.
Trailing by one, Nauset pulled its goalie with 40 seconds to go, and eight seconds later gained a six-on-four advantage after CT/CCA picked up an untimely penalty. The Warriors blasted two big shots at Carleton down the stretch, but he blocked both and gobbled up the rebounds.
“I was just trying to focus on the puck, not anything else that was happening around me,” said Carleton, mirroring his overall philosophy. “When I come to the rink, I forget school and my personal life and just focus on making plays for the team. It was tough there at the end tonight, but we hung in there.”
The win won’t count in the record books, as CT/CCA chose not to count the game before the season started, but it was a game the Crusaders (5-0-1) will never forget after scoring two goals 12 seconds apart in the third period to rally and emerge victorious.
“We’ve come back in our last two games, so we don’t hang our hands too often,” said Carleton. “We’re a resilient bunch.”
With a rock solid leader as the last line of defense.
