Class Notes

Congratulations to CCA Girls soccer coaches, Aaron Crowell ’86 and Abigail Doyle ’08, who were recently honored by the Cape and Islands Soccer League with “Coach of the Year” Award.

James Fogg x89 moved to the Vineyard a few years ago after being the Executive Chef of a 2000 seat restaurant and banquet facility called Venus de Milo outside Providence, R.I. According to James, he has found a nice little niche for himself on Martha’s Vineyard. A bit of catering (some exciting clients), running food production for a busy general store and now baking(for the first time in his career) for a small coffee shop. He recently found a like-minded partner and they have their sights set on a little food shop to make their own soon. He recently returned to CCA to visit and claimed, “he was blown away and happy to see the progress the school has made.”

Lindsay Hirt ’03 is working in the field of marine animal research and conservation by collecting data on the water and through collaboration with wildlife scientists, conducting public awareness and outreach education events about coastal conservation, and analyzing and helping to implement conservation techniques for marine wildlife.

Most of her work is either as an independent contract biologist or with Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), which is the world's leading international organization dedicated solely to the conservation and preservation of the ocean's marine mammals. She is also a volunteer for IFAW in YarmouthPort and New England Aquarium in Boston, as a highly trained first responder to marine life that has stranded on shore - alive or dead.

Lindsay’s specialty is in risk issues to whales and dolphins - like habitat encroachment, marine debris entanglements, whaling, captivity, and vessel strikes. Her thesis, which she is about to submit for publication, is on how to reduce mortality in the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale, of which there are less than 500 remaining.

She is just a few months from finishing her master's degree is an M.S. in Emergency Management at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The emergency management aspect relates to wildlife management and animal disaster issues - like oil spill response, tornado/hurricane/earthquake devastation and how that affects wild and companion animals, and marine mammal beach strandings. Lindsay is the only biologist in the program, so it's a bit of a different application than some of the others in the cohort (they work in public health, fire/police/public safety, etc.)
